The first people to live in Waco were the Huaco Indians. This is how the city go it's name. This tribe lived in beehive shaped huts made of poles, and buffalo hides. They planted corn, beans, pumpkins, melons, and peach trees. In 1837, during the days of the Texas Republic, the Texas Rangers created Ft. Fisher, an outpost to protect early settlers. In 1857, the town of Waco was incorporated by the state legislature.
