HISTORY
South Padre Island was first discovered in 1519 by a Spanish explorer named Alonzo De Pineda. Then in 1804 a missionary priest named Padre Jose Nicholas Balli founded the first settlement because he was given the land by King Charles IV of Spain. I don't know when the name was changed, but I am guessing it was named after the priest later on. South Padre became a ciry in Texas in 1973.
