HISTORY
Price Carl of Solms Braunfels,Germany went to San Antonio on March 6,1845 and found out about some land from Ranger Captain John Coffee Hays. The land was 15 miles above Seguin on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers. On March 15, 1845 Prince Carl entered into an agreement with Maria Antonia Garza and her husband Rafael E. Garza for 1,265 acres of the Veramendi land. On March 18th Prince Carl crossed the Guadalupe at the for of the military road El Camino Real from Nacogdoches to San Antonio with 25 other men to the land he had purchased. That night they camped on the Comal River at the foot of the present Bridge Street. During the night there was a snow storm that deposited snow in tents which could be rolled in their hand, but by noon had melted. Prince Carl took this a good sign and so they settled their German Colony there and gave the name New Braunfels. New Braunfels was founded on March 21,1845. The first wagons of immigrants crossed the Guadalupe and they were placed in an encampment erected on a bluff overlooking the Comal River.
